Choppy Layered Hair?

Question

My hair is pretty much exactly 4 inches all over (only 2-3 at the back)

I want to add layers, but I don't want my hair to be much shorter so I don't want to take much off.

Can comeone describe to me how to choppily layer my hair myself, without taking much off but still having it noticable?

A cut like you want should be done properly and there's a big chance you won't end up with the choppy cut that looks good if you do it yourself, or there's the equal chance that you can chop around on your hair and end up with a fabulous look.  Suggest you do it yourself and if it doesn't work out, go to a salon.
