Chris Algieri beats Winston Mathis with a devastating left hook – Boxing News
Chris Algieri, the unbeaten jr. welterweight pugilist, went head to head with Winston Mathis at The Paramount on Saturday night. After a tough competition, Algieri was able to defeat Mathis with a ravaging left hook on Mathis’ body. Referee Mercante Jr.
stopped the fight after analysing Mathis’ condition of not being able to compete anymore.
Algieri, who had 14 wins, 0 losses and 7 knockouts in his portfolio, had control of the fight right from the start. The initial two rounds had Algieri controlling Mathis with jabs and good defense. On the other hand, Mathis, who stood with 7 wins, 5 losses,
1 ties and 2 knockouts, looked hopelessly outgunned throughout the fight, even though he was trying his level best to get in the game.
Appreciating Chris’ fighting spirit, Joe DeGuardia, said, “Chris looked good tonight. He was in outstanding condition from his training in Southern California and he continues to improve. The terrific fans here at The Paramount continue to show their support
of our events by packing the house and we look forward to returning here.”
He further added, “We’ve got big plans in 2012 for Chris and it’s very rewarding to see the terrific support he receives in the New York City area as well as the national media.”
Chris stopped Mathis in the third round to prove that he is a fast-paced pugilist with tricks that can help him overpower any fighter of his calibre. Since Algieri stepped in the ring with his unbeaten streak on the line, it was important for him to win
the bout. However, what Chris did was something that was not really expected. His dominating and impressive victory over his opponent has now uplifted his rankings even more.
Just days before the bout, Algieri, talking about his career plans in an interview, said that he has put a lot of efforts to reach this level in his boxing career. He said that he plans to pursue a medical career but he would want to become the world champion
first. After this fight, chances are that Chris will get his title shot soon.
