Chris Cairns relieved after winning libel case against Modi – Cricket News Update
After spending a period of roughly two years fighting against the allegations of match-fixing leveled at him by ex-IPL commissioner Lalit Modi, former New Zealand player, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Christopher-Lance-Cairns-c50906, has expressed relief after the court ruled in his favour, clearing his
name of all charges.
“Today's verdict lifts a dark cloud that has been over me for the past two years,” the 41-year-old said. “I feel mixed emotions. Firstly, sadness that I should ever have had to put myself, my friends and my family through this because of one man's misdirected
allegations.”
“But I also feel great joy because my past career has come through unscathed because I had the courage to stand up in the highest court to defend my name,” he added. “Lastly, I feel great relief that I am able to walk into any cricket ground in the world
with my head held high.”
The scandal has its root in a defamatory tweet the then IPL chief http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Lalit-Kumar-Modi-c72144 posted on the micro-blogging site in January 2010, in which he claimed that Cairns had not been considered for the upcoming IPL auction owing to his involvement in match-fixing
during the now-defunct Indian Cricket League (ICL).
The right-hander had served as captain of the Chandigarh http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Lions-c808 in the ICL, but his contract was terminated in 2008, after he failed to disclose an ankle injury. Rumors of match-fixing were attached to his abrupt departure from the league, which he denied.
However, an accusation by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Modi-c76470, a powerful figure in the cricketing world, threatened to cast a shadow over Cairns’ career, and the former Black Caps’ all-rounder was forced to take the matter to the London High Court.
Justice David Bean announced the verdict in Cairns’ favour yesterday on March 26, saying that Modi had failed to bring forth any reliable or substantial evidence against the Kiwi all-rounder.
The court awarded the former http://www.senore.com/Cricket/New-Zealand-c754 cricketer 90,000 pounds in damages, in addition to 40,000 pounds in interim costs. Modi has expressed the intention to appeal against the judgment, but whatever the outcome of that; Cairns’ name has officially been
cleared of all charges.
