Chris Capuano and Jose Reyes shine as New York Mets defeat Pittsburgh Pirates 7-0 – MLB Update
Chris Capuano and Jose Reyes put a collective effort to contribute to New York Mets’ 7-0 win over Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday, June 12 at PNC Park.
Capuano provided an infallibly ideal start to the team with the speed that literally rendered the Pirates’ hitters unable to play him with confidence. His rival, Kevin Correia, was in no way ineffective up until the seven innings when neither of the teams
had scored any run yet.
The game witnessed the in-form Mets’ pitcher throw seven unhittable innings, while Reyes had three hits and a homer to take a 2-1 lead in the four-game series.
This was the second consecutive win of Capuano, menacingly prevailing on the rival offence. "Right now, I feel like I'm making good pitches," said Capuano. “I feel like I'm able to throw the ball where I want, and I've got my velocity up to level where my
changeup is effective off that fastball, so I'm just trying to just execute pitches."
While the Mets’ star was proving his mettle as a key team pitcher, Correia was taken to task in the eighth inning. Bay had scored the first run in the seventh inning, as the Mets’ hitters pointed their guns at the now debilitated Pirates’ pitchers.
Correia, who retired 14 hitters he faced, gave up no less than six hits in the eighth inning which proved disastrous to not only his otherwise meritorious performance upto the seventh inning but also to the team. "I felt I had a really good outing until
two outs in the eighth inning," Correia said. "I just couldn't get that last out, and that was disappointing."
Justin Turner doubled to deep right, to score the second run of the game for the Mets, as Carlos Beltran drew a two-run homer. Angel Pagan was next in the line to score the fourth, and overall the fifth, run for the team, laying a solid foundation for the
team’s victory.
Having a 5-0 lead, the Mets’ hitters then turned against Daniel McCutchen. Scott Hairston was first who homered to left to make it 6-0 while Reyes had the third hit and a homer of the game in the same inning, piling up the lead to 7-0. Reyes now leads the
National League in hits and amongst the top three in runs, total bases, doubles, triples and steals.
The 7-0 lead effectively marked the Mets’ dominance and ultimate victory in the game once Bobby Parnell came out to pitch in the ninth inning. Parnell threw a shut-out inning to win the second of four-game series whose last game will be played on Monday.
