Chris Carpenter helps St. Louis Cardinals shutout Milwaukee Brewers 2-0 to win series – MLB Update

Chris Carpenter pitched a complete-game shutout for the St. Louis Cardinals to guide them to a 2-0 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers and reignite their hopes of qualifying for the postseason on Tuesday, September 7 at Busch Stadium in St. Louis, Missouri.
Carpenter allowed just four hits in his nine innings to silence the National League Central leaders, who lost their second game in as many days against the Cardinals. The Brewers are now in a dilemma as this loss has served as an eye-opener for the otherwise
strong batting team.
The right-handed starting pitcher struck five batters out over 97 pitches to bring his earned-run average down to a more decent 3.75 for the season. Carpenter won his ninth game of the season to bring his wins on terms with his losses but his performance
was far superior to what his record depicts. Corey Hart had been on an 18-game hitting-streak for the Brewers but Carpenter reduced Hart to 0-for-4 and brought an end to his streak.
Zack Greinke has been a sensation in Milwaukee’s bull-pen but even after a decent performance in this game, he lost his sixth game of the season. On any other day, two runs in seven innings would have won him a game but Carpenter’s superior performance proved
to be the only hindrance in this result.
The Cardinals scored two quick-runs, one each in the fourth and the fifth inning to gain an advantage over the visitors and their pitcher alone was enough to guide the team through even with a slender lead. Yadier Molina drove in a run in the fourth inning,
allowing Lance Berkman to complete his run before Rafael Furcal unleashed his arms in the subsequent inning to double the lead for the home side. Greinke continued to pitch through the seventh inning before being replaced by Latroy Hawkins to close the game.
Greinke showed good variety over his spell of 87 pitches to improve his ERA to 3.94. His win-loss record still remains decent at 14-6 and he will be upbeat to regain his winning form in his next start. Hawkins too was decent in the solitary inning that he
pitched.
The Cardinals won the three-game series 2-1.
