Chris Carpenter’s pitching helps St. Louis Cardinals defeat Cincinnati Reds 1-0 – MLB Update
St. Louis Cardinals’ starter, Chris Carpenter had an extraordinary day with his pitching as he threw eight score-less innings with an ERA of 3.74 in the Cardinals’ 1-0 victory over the Cincinnati Reds at Busch Stadium, St. Louis on July 4.
In the initial seven innings of the game, both the teams were unable to post any run. The pitchers were on top during this span as they got the batters out. At the top of the first inning, Fred Lewis was lined out to the pitcher and Brandon Phillips struck-out
looking. The Cardinals’ batters also failed to contribute runs as Ryan Theriot flied out towards centre-field and Jon Jay got out at second base at the bottom of the first inning.
In the fourth inning, Jay walked but Lance Berkman was fouled out to first base and David Freese lined out off right-field. The Reds’ batters missed scoring opportunities at the top of the fifth inning when Ramon Hernandez singled towards left-field and
Edgar Renteria was grounded out to third base without any run.
During the seventh inning, the Cardinals’ left-fielder Matt Holliday was flown out to right field and Freese grounded out into double-play. Berkman was the last batter who got out at second base in the end of seventh inning.
Carpenter presented only six hits and gave up only one walk on his 119 pitches with three strike-outs. Carpenter expressed his feelings and said, “I felt good. Felt strong at the end just like I have. Back and forth, back and forth. We were both pitching
well and we were fortunate to get a break.”
The Cardinals’ pinch-hitter, Mark Hamilton reached towards third base on an infield single while Colby Rasmus scored the first and last run of the game to give his team a decisive 1-0 lead. Hamilton said, “Honestly, my first thought when I got to the bag
was we need to get this game shut down because he deserves this win. It's big for us because we had heard the Brewers lost and that we can take sole possession of first place.”
At the top of the ninth inning, the Reds’ out-fielder, Jay Bruce was struck-out swinging and Drew Stubbs flied out to right-field. The Cardinals’ continued their winning streak and took a 1-0 lead against the Reds in the three-game series.
