Chris Davidson and Fredrick Patacchia survive Round 2 of Hurley Pro – 2011 ASP World Tour
The intense Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Tour action continued with the 11th and 12th heat of Hurley Pro’s Round 1 at Lower Trestles in California, America, on Monday, September 19.
The 11th heat saw Australia’s Chris Davidson prevail over his compatriot, Daniel Ross, to clinch top honours and secure a place in the third round, while removing his opponent from the contention for event title.
Hawaii’s Fredrick Patacchia defeated America’s Patrick Gudauskas in the 12th heat to advance to Round 3, consequently bringing the competition to a premature end for his rival.
The second day of Hurley Pro presented surfers with rippable two-to-four foot waves, along with strong onshore winds. While high scores were there for the taking, strong winds kept many surfers from accomplishing that.
The 11th heat turned out to be a low-scoring meet due to the mentioned surfing conditions and the failure of surfers to adjust to them. As the man-on-man battle kicked-off, the 44-year-old Davidson got down to business right away and locked a wave to collect 5.17 points. Ross immediately responded with a 4.00-point wave to narrow down the lead to some extent.
Ross caught a half almost halfway through the heat to add another 6.50 points to his account and move to a heat-total of 10.50 points. However, Davidson managed to beat his rival’s score in the final minutes of the battle by scoring 5.53 points off a wave and finishing with a heat-total of 10.70 points.
The final heat of the elimination Round 2 pitted Patacchia against Gudauskas. Both surfers had struggled to find their form on first day of the competition, but needed to come up with a good result in their Round 2 heat in order to stay alive in the race for event-title.
As the battle kicked-off, Patacchia got-off to a great start, locking a wave to score 6.50 points off it and taking the lead. Gudauskas immediately responded with a 6.17-point wave, keeping the contest very much alive.
The Hawaiian soon added another 7.63 points to his account, moving to a heat-total of 14.13 points. The score sealed the fate of the contest in his favour after Gudauskas only added an additional 6.73 points to his account for a heat-total of 12.90 points.
