The 16-year-old Chris Deegan met expectations of his supporters by earning the title of 10km Open Water race in Men’s 16 Year Olds class on day two of the 2012 Australian Open Water Championships on Saturday, February 18.
The three-day Australian meet was of considerable importance as it precedes the 2012 London Olympic Games and gave an opportunity to their national stars to compete with each other before the mega event.
Burnside’s Deegan smothered all struggles of his challengers and captured gold medal of the distant event in a sterling time of 1 hour, 59 minutes and 13.02 seconds. His nerve-wrecking performance was almost four minutes ahead of Surrey Park’s Sam Warrick,
who crossed the finishing line in a time of 2 hours, 03 minutes and 14.35 seconds and secured silver medal.
The silver medallist remained nearly twenty-two seconds ahead of Hugh Cumming of St Peters Wester, who occupied bronze medal of the event with an effort of 2 hours, 03 minutes and 36.42 seconds.
After a while, the 17-year-old David Parsonson of Miami upset his rivals by obtaining gold medal of the 10km discipline in his age class. Parsonson proved his mettle in the 17-18 Year Olds category and acquired gold medal of the distant event by submitting
an effort of 1 hour, 57 minutes and 39.80 seconds.
The champion remained in a lead of approximately one minute over Joshua Richardson of Albany Creek, who settled on the medal rostrum for silver medal. The 18-year-old Richardson demonstrated his fascinating efforts and finished second in the event by reporting
a time of 1 hour, 58 minutes and 17.67 seconds.
Richardson was chased by the 18-year-old Gene Williams of Arena, who secured third fastest spot of the race. The 18-year-old Williams was just 1.37 seconds behind his former finisher and reached the victory stand for bronze medal by producing an effort of
1 hour, 58 minutes and 19.04 seconds.
