Chris Denorfia and Dustin Moseley spark as San Diego Padres nip Houston Astros, 3-1 – MLB Update
San Diego Padres’ out-fielder, Chris Denorfia and starter Dustin Moseley were impressive throughout the game as Denorfia went 2-for-3 and Moseley struck-out five batters in the Padres’ 3-1 victory over the Houston Astros at Petco Park, San Diego on June
3.
The first three innings of the game passed with no score as the pitchers threw the ball in good line to restrict the scoring shots of the batters. In the third inning, the Padres missed the scoring opportunities when Rob Johnson flew out to centre-field
and Denorfia lined out to centre.
Both teams opened their scoring account in the fourth inning as the Astros added one run at the top and the Padres posted two runs to go-ahead 2-1 at the bottom of the fourth inning. J.R. Towles hit a sacrifice bunt towards first base and Chris Johnson scored
one run for the Astros.
On the other side, Jason Bartlett scored one run on the drive of Ryan Ludwick to centre-field. Chase Headley was thrown out at third base and Ludwick advanced to second base on a wide throw. The second run for the Padres was taken by Ludwick when Aaron Cunningham
doubled to deep left-field.
In the fifth inning, Denorfia hit a one-run homer (409 feet) towards centre-field and led off the Padres 3-1. The last four innings were score-less for both sides as the batters failed to put any run on the score-board. In the ninth inning, Brett Wallace
walked but Johnson was struck-out swinging and did not add more runs for the Astros.
Moseley pitched seven dominant innings with an ERA of 3.00 and allowed just one run on six hits with one earned run. He gave only one walk on his 103 pitches. Moseley commented on the game and said, “It got everybody rocking and rolling. It was good. It
definitely helps when you've got your fans behind you and you have some energy flowing. Guys can feed off that.”
The Astros’ starter, J.A. Happ was little bit shaky as he threw six innings with an ERA of 4.65 and gave three runs on six hits including three earned runs. He was able to strike-out two batters and permitted two walks on his 105 pitches.
