Chris Denorfia shines as San Diego Padres defeat Philadelphia Phillies 5-4 – MLB Update
San Diego Padres’ outfielder, Chris Denorfia was impressive with the bat as he stole a decisive run with single RBI and went 2-for-5 with an average of .276 in the Padres’ 5-4 win against the Philadelphia Phillies at Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia on July
25.
The Phillies started well as they got off the mark in the very first inning by posting a single run and took a 1-0 lead. Shane Victorino doubled to deep right-field and Chase Utley scored the first run for the Phillies. Ryan Howard was thrown out at home
plate during the first inning.
In the second inning, the Padres smashed four runs to go-ahead 4-1. Rob Johnson doubled off right-centre and Jesus Guzman added the tie run for the Padres. The second run was taken by Johnson when Denorfia drove a single-run shot towards left-field. Then,
Denorfia stole home for the third run and the last run of the second inning was taken by Jason Bartlett when Chase Headley doubled to deep centre-field.
During the third inning, the Padres’ batters got out as Kyle Blanks struck-out swinging, Aaron Harang also struck-out swinging and Guzman grounded out to second base. Similarly, the Phillies’ starter, Carlos Lee struck-out swinging, Michael Martinez flied
out to centre-field and Howard also flied out to centre-field.
The Padres continued to increase their lead as they posted one run at the top of the fourth while the Phillies were able to add just two runs to cut their deficit 5-3, at the bottom of the fourth inning. Ryan Ludwick hit a sacrifice fly towards centre-field
and Denorfia put the last run for the Padres on their score-card.
On the other hand, Domonic Brown tripled to centre-field and Raul Ibanez contributed a single run. The second run was taken by Brown when Carlos Ruiz drove a single-run shot towards centre-field. The pitchers were on top during the fifth inning.
Harang was little bit shaky for the Padres as he allowed four runs on eight hits and pitched his six innings with an ERA of 3.45. He gave up four earned runs and had just two strike-outs on 100 pitches.
The Phillies reduced their lead 5-4 during the sixth inning when Ibanez singled to right-field and Victorino added a single run on the score-board. Despite an exciting victory, the Padres lost the four-game series 3-1 at Philadelphia.
