Chris DiMarco records seven birdies in the opening round of the Crowne Plaza Invitational
Chris DiMarco carded a four-under par 66 in the opening round of the Crowne Plaza Invitational to share the sixth spot at the Colonial Country Club on Thursday, May 24, 2012.
DiMarco got off to a quick start and carded two consecutive birdies on the first two holes he played.
Through 11 holes, he was five under for the round and just one stroke behind the clubhouse leader Zach Johnson.
However, he lost control over his game and signed three bogeys during the stretch of five holes, thereafter.
Yet, he tried his best to remain in contention and recorded two birdies on the 17th and 18th holes.
According to him, the conditions at the venue were really tough and it was difficult to make good drives, especially in the presence of strong gust of winds.
However, he admitted that the winds were consistent relating to the direction in which they were blowing.
Therefore, it was the only advantage the players had while making calculations for their shots on the course.
“It is really tough out there,” he said. “The only good thing is that the wind is pretty consistent on which way it is going. Not too often you get out there, and you feel like you are into the wind and it's downwind. It's staying pretty consistent. When
it's that hard I would assume it has to stay that consistent”.
“You got to really be patient out there,” he added. “That's what the key is. You are going to make bogeys. You just hope to make a bunch of birdies. And the course is perfect, I never really seen the course in such perfect condition”.
Golf commentators believe that DiMarco is headed in the right direction right through the start of the event.
He himself admitted that he could not believe the way he played and recorded seven birdies in total.
In the meantime, Johnson surged to the top of the leaderboard after carding a bogey-free six-under par 64.
David Toms, the defending champion, faltered and recorded a four-over par 74 after he suffered three bogeys and a double bogey against a lone birdie.
