Chris Edwards eyes Lonsdale Belt after winning Commonwealth title – Boxing news
The current Commonwealth and former British flyweight champion, Chris Edwards is going to land an unstoppable storm of punches in an effort to bring the Lonsdale Belt his way.
The British professional boxer, Chris Edwards will be facing another English Flyweight Champion Paul Edwards on June 11, 2011 at the Liverpool Olympia in Merseyside, United Kingdom. The 12-round competitive bout between the two rivals will be televised on
Sky Sports for the boxing fans around the world.
It has been observed in the past that the 35-year-old experienced, Edwards does not look out of shape before his fight. He always looks energetic, determined, focused and one hundred percent fit to fight. This is the reason his fights become a tough contest
for the opposition.
Edwards, who fights at Flyweight and Super Flyweight divisions, won the Commonwealth (British Empire) Flyweight title fighting against the Namibian Flyweight contender Abmerk Shindjuu in his second last fight on February 19, 2010. Edwards won a unanimous
points decision against Shindjuu at the Fenton Manor Sports Complex in Staffordshire, United Kingdom. However, Edwards won his last fight against Francis Croes, where he won another points decision at the Palace Hotel in Manchester, United Kingdom.
The Orthodox stance professional smashed the Liverpudlian in front of his home crowd. As a result, he claimed one of the most prestigious awards of boxing. The fighter who wins four British titles is awarded the Lonsdale Belt to give him nobility. Winning
the Lonsdale title will be the biggest achievement for Edwards.
Edwards said, “I've got the Commonwealth Belt on my mantelpiece at home and there's room for the Lonsdale Belt next to it, it will mean a bit more polishing, but I won't mind that.”
He further added, “I used to be a naughty lad and was always in and out of prison for fighting when I was a kid. I remember meeting up with a mate of mine, Gary Marston, who was a professional boxer. He said I should try boxing. It got me off the streets
and I started to believe in myself. If it wasn't for boxing, I'd have wasted my life going in and out of jail.”
No doubt, the early losses of Edwards are considerable but he has improved a lot and that can be clearly seen from his last few performances.
On the other hand, the former ABA champion Paul Edwards is looking very excited and determined towards his title defence which he won against Shinny Bayaar in December 2010.
Hopefully, the competition will be exciting to watch between the two pugilists.
