Chris Friend and Willian Cardoso emerge triumphant in Round 4 of Burton Toyota Pro – Surfing News
Australia’s Chris Friend and Brazil’s Willian Cardoso confirmed their place in the fifth round (Round of 16) of the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 6-Star Burton Toyota Pro at Newcastle’s Surfest after prevailing in their respective Round 4 (Round
of 24) heats at Merewether Beach in New South Wales, Australia, on Friday, March 16.
Hawaii’s Olamana Eleogram and Australia’s Alexandre Chacon also advanced through into the fifth round after taking runner-up position in the fifth and sixth heat respectively. South Africa’s Royden Bryson and Australia’s Jordin Watson were unable to progress
further in the event after finishing third place in their respective heats.
The latest ASP World Qualifying Series (WQS) event offered the world’s best surfers a chance to not only get their hands on the handsome prize cheque as well as the ASP rating points. The surfing conditions at the primary event site turned out to be quite
decent on day 5, with clean two-foot waves giving surfers an ample opportunity to collect good scores.
Pitted against Eleogram and Bryson in the fifth heat, Friend put on a solid performance to clinch top honours. The Australian surfer made use of his local knowledge of the waves to lock a couple of juicy waves and posting a 6.50 and 7.00 on the score-board
for a heat-total of 13.50 points.
Eleogram got off to a modest start, scoring a 4.93 off his first business-wave. He soon backed it up with a 7.17-point wave to finish with a heat-total of 12.10 points. The effort served to put him in runner-up place, consequently taking him through into
the next round.
Bryson finished with an identical score to Eleogram after scoring a 5.33 and 6.77 off his best-two waves. However, the Hawaiian surfer’s higher single-wave score of 7.17 against Bryson’s 6.77 pushed the latter to third place, consequently eliminating him
from the competition.
The sixth heat saw Cardoso walk away with a convincing victory over Chacon and Watson. The Brazilian surfer opened his account with a 6.17-point wave and immediately followed it up with an impressive 7.50-point wave to finish with a heat-total of 13.67 points.
Chacon also managed to go through into the next round after scoring a heat-total of 9.67 points, which included a 4.60 and 5.07 points.
Watson collected a couple of scores in the four-point range to finish with a heat-total of 9.20 points, consequently getting removed from the contention for the event-title.
