Chris Gane looks to deliver his season-changing performance at Madeira once again
Chris Gane has remarkable memories of last year’s Madeira Islands Open – Portugal, while planning to be more impressive this year.
The 37-year-old English golfer displayed an amazing performance in the 2011 edition of the tournament, finishing for a second position tie.
He scored an 8-under 280 by shooting six remarkable birdies. He played extremely well at the Porto Santo Golfe and came close to winning the first European Tour title in Portugal.
Gane earned €43,425, after finishing as a runner-up, and recorded a total of €64,448 by the end of the season. He was playing at the Challenge Tour and finished many tournaments among the top players.
In light of such an impressive performance in Portugal, and in other nations, he earned the European Tour card for 2012. Now, he is planning to be even more impressive this time, at the Santo da Serra Golf in Madeira, Portugal.
“I had been playing really badly, but that week everything just clicked,” said Gane.
“And that result meant I got my card at the end of the season. It was great.  The prize money is so much greater this week and in Saint Omer (the Saint Omer Open presented by Neuflize OBC) so it’s massive for Challenge Tour players and for players like me
who have a lower ranking and need to do well in the re-rank”.
He added:
“This week is crucial event because if I do well, I’ll probably play the rest of the season on the Challenge Tour. Hypothetically, if I won €20,000 this week I wouldn’t be in the top 20 of the re-rank, but I’d be in the top 20 of the Challenge Tour Rankings”.
Gane has played many times at the Santo da Serra Golf in Madeira. He knows the course well, and is now excited again to tee off coming Thursday.
He turned professional in 1993 and has won two challenge tour titles so far. He recorded both the victories in 2001, at the Austrian Open and Terme Euganee International Open Padova.
In the current year, he has been facing trouble scoring. He has played three tournaments so far, however, what remained a matter of concern for him was that he finished outside the top 100 in all the three events.
Commentators said that he needs to work harder in the upcoming tournament in order to earn the tour card for next year as well.
