http://www.senore.com/Cricket/CH-Gayle-c1221 absent from Windies training squad – Cricket News Update
Chris Gayle’s prospects of inclusion in the line-up for the upcoming home series against Australia look fairly unpromising, following his exclusion from the squad selected by the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/West-Indies-c760 Cricket Board (WICB) for a fitness and training camp.
A 30-man squad, comprising 17 contracted players, and 13 who are under consideration for selection, has been announced to undergo training in Barbados, prior to the series against the Aussies – a line-up in which Gayle is missing.
The 32-year-old has not played for the national squad since the World Cup last year. Following the tournament, he gave a controversial interview in late April 2011 to KLAS Sports, a Jamaican radio station, during which he slammed the board for having failed
to effectively treat his injuries, and labeled the head coach, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/RR-Sarwan-c2371, saying the coach
had “messed him up” mentally.
Following his interview, the WICB demanded that Gayle take back his words.
“The Board requires you to provide a general public retraction of the comments made in the interview in question and the effect it has had on the team, coach, captain and management, and to express a commitment to team and management,” WICB chief-executive,
Ernest Hilarie, informed Gayle this January.
“If the terms of that retraction can be agreed, WICB will be happy to consider you eligible once again for selection.”
However, the belligerent batsman refused to issue any apologies or retractions.
With no national duties to attend to, the batsman continued to play in a number of T20 competitions, ranging from http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Dolphins-c781 in Durban (SA),
once he recovers from his groin injury.
Meanwhile, with Gayle conspicuous only by his absence, the selected players will undergo training for two weeks, after which those who make it to the final squad will be battling it out against the Aussies in 5 ODIs, two T20Is, and a 3-match Test series.
