Chris Heisey shines as Cincinnati Reds defeat New York Yankees 10-2 – MLB Update
After receiving a 4-2 defeat in the afternoon game that was the remake of the yesterdays’ rained out fixture, the National League’s Cincinnati Reds defeated the American League’s New York Yankees 10-2 in the final outing of the three-game interleague series
at the Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati, on June 22.
The Yankees were optimistic to make a series sweep after they clinched the afternoon game due to some brilliant performance by their pitchers and batters. However, their hopes started to wash out right in the first inning when Chris Heisey launched a beautiful
one-run homer to the Yankees newly appointed starter Brian Gordon.
Heisey blistered two more homers, one each in the fifth and the eighth inning to make five RBIs in this game.
Though Nick Swisher tied the game at 1-all with a flat one-run homer off the Reds’ starter Johnny Cueto, who missed the afternoon game due to soreness in neck, but the Reds took their lead back even in the bottom of the second inning. Jonny Gomes blistered
a one-run homer to Gordon for a 2-1 lead.
The Reds then struggled little against Gordon, who retired six batters in the third and fourth inning and took one batter in the fifth before allowing his third homer and second to Heisey. This hit took the Reds into a strong 4-1 position.
"When you get a hit in your first at-bat, it takes the pressure off the rest of your day," Heisey said. "It relaxes you. Nobody likes to go 0-for-4 or 0-for-5. One home run's a good day, let alone three."
The Yankees’ manager felt it suitable to replace Gordon with some strong reliever, so he aligned Boone Logan, who retired and struck-out one batter in the sixth.
"I'm definitely a little disappointed in the outcome," Gordon said. "I made three mistakes and paid for all three of them."
The Yankees’ batting line-up was struggling against Cueto. By the top of the seventh inning, Cueto had made six strike-outs, allowing just one run, walking three and giving just two hits. This win took Cueto to fifth win with an exceptional 1.63 ERA.
In the seventh inning, the Reds’ Scott Rolen, Brandon Phillips and Jay Bruce each made an RBI single to take the lead to 7-1. All of these runs were made against the Yankees’ reliever Hector Noesi as he had taken the ball from Chris Wade before the start
of this inning.
Alex Rodriguez made a line drive RBI single in the top of the eighth inning for the Yankees’ second run.
However, in the bottom of this inning, Scott Rolen made another RBI before Heisey launched his third homer of the day to cement their 10-2 win. It also helped the Reds to improve their record to 39 wins in 2011.
