Chris Hoy breaks Sir Steve Redgrave’s record of winning the maximum medals for Great Britain
Chris Hoy becomes the most successful Olympian for Great Britain after his remarkable performance on Tuesday night.
The cyclist grabbed his 6th Olympics Gold medal and entered the record books.
He considers himself lucky to receive such an honour in front of the home crowd and a moment he might never forget.
It happened during the final sixth day of the Olympics Track cycling event as Hoy was challenged by Germany’s Maximilian at the event.
"I couldn't have asked for more than that," said an emotional Hoy after the race.
"I think you might have seen the emotion on my face when I got on the podium”.
“It's just so much and you're containing your emotions for so long, you're focussing on performance and not the outcome”.
“But to do this in front of a home crowd and people talk about the burden of expectations but it couldn't be further from the truth”.
“You feel this energy although you're trying to block out individual voices and that helped me in the last bend and the last straight".
He finished the race in a total time of 10 minutes and 177 seconds and occupied the top overall spot.
Simon Van Velthooven of Team New Zealand finished second with Juan Peralta Gascon of Team Spain, Njisane Nicholas Phillip of Team Trinidad And Tobago, Sergey Borisov of Team Russia and Kazunari Watanabe of Team Japan occupied the next four positions respectively.
The 36-year-old led Team Great Britain at the 2012 Olympic Games as the team’s flag carrier.
His first gold at the home event came at the team sprint where he was accompanied Jason Kenny and Philip Hindes in a record-breaking performance.
The trio set a new world record in the velodrome and became Team GB’s joint record holder with Sir Steve Redgrave.
Chris levelled his gold tally with Sir Steve Redgrave (5 gold, 1 silver) and now became his nation’s most successful Olympian ever.
He also jointly holds the honour of winning the most medals by a British athlete in the Olympics Games with Bradley Wiggins.
Hoy is now setting his eyes at the 2014 Commonwealth Games scheduled in Scotland and is hopeful to please the home fans with some winning performances at the event.
