Chris Hughton, Martin Jol among favourites to succeed Sam Allardyce at Blackburn Rovers
Chris Hughton and Martin Jol are being reported as the frontrunners for the manager's job at English Premier League side Blackburn Rovers.
Former manager Sam Allardyce was sacked this weekend by the new owners of the club, after Rovers’ 2-1 loss to Bolton Wanderers on Sunday.
Sam was in charge of the managerial duties at the club when Blackburn was taken over by the Indian family. The club owners have said that they want to take the club to a higher level and the sacking was not due to any personal differences with the former
Newcastle United boss.
The co-owner Vankatesh Rao added that the final decision will be taken after some consideration rather than in a hurry.
He said, “It's a very prestigious decision so we have to take some time. There's nothing personal against Sam. He's a very sweet and nice person, but we want a younger and more energetic appointment. We want to do good for the club and want to see it doing
well, like every other owner wants.”
However, the departure of Allardyce has come as a shock for players and fans at Ewood Park. Sam was considered to be doing great at Blackburn, as he managed to keep the side in the middle of the Premier League table. Rovers are 13th in the standings,
just 3 points behind 7th placed Sunderland AFC.
Meanwhile, the Chairman Anuradha Desai has called for calm among the Rovers faithful and stated that the decision was made in the best interest of the club.
She said, “We do not mean anything bad for Sam Allardyce but we feel that we need to take the club up in the league and grow. We want Blackburn to be fourth or fifth in the league or even better. We had been talking to Sam for the past few weeks and he did
not fit in with our vision for the club's future."
Chris Hughton, who recently left Newcastle United, has been reported to be the favourite to replace Sam. It is also rumoured that former Ajax Amsterdam coach Martin Jol is also being considered for the job. Among his credentials, Jol also has former Premier
League experience as manager, when he was in charge of Tottenham Hotspur from 2004 to 2007.
Former Blackburn player and current Spurs assistant 1st team coach, Tim Sherwood has also been reported as a possible candidate for the position.
