Chris Hughton unbothered by contract extension and Fernando Torres has more to offer
Newcastle manager Chris Hughton says that he expects to sign a new contract with the club soon but made it clear that an extension is not at the top of his priority list.
The current deal for Hughton at St James Park will end next season, and he is yet to sign a new deal with the Magpies.
Hughton however has made sure that the uncertainty surrounding his future at the club does not overshadow his team’s performance this season. He took over the club when they had been relegated and brought them right back to the Premier League. He said that the only thing on his mind right now is to keep Newcastle in the top flight for another season. Hughton said that he spends most of his time making plans for the team, and does not have the time to ponder on off-the-field problems.
He said that prolonging his stay at St James’ Park will be great, and he is hoping that an agreement will be reached with the club management. However, he reiterated that he will not let the contract speculations distract him from the job on the pitch.
Meanwhile Liverpool’s ace front man Fernando Torres, who has not been in the best of form since coming back from the World Cup, has assured his fans that there is more to come from him.
The Spaniard had been hampered by various injuries since the end of last season. Torres has been at Anfield for 3 seasons now and has been a crowd favourite ever since he came to Liverpool. The World Cup winner has been Reds leading goal scorer for the last 2 seasons, and the team has been heavily depending on his goal scoring ability. However, in recent times he has not been able to produce his best and said that in due time he will be back to his norm and goals will also start coming.
Fernando Torres was also not able to play a significant role in the World Cup winning campaign for Spain. He went to the World Cup after a layoff with injury. Torres missed last month or so of Liverpool’s season due to a knee injury and after an operation went to the World Cup. The front man was given a start by Coach Vicente del Bosque in the first 2 games but was not able to impress much and later he was moved to the bench. Torres was sent on in the World Cup final in extra time against Netherlands, and managed to make a telling contribution as he was involved in the World Cup winning goal that Iniesta scored. However minutes after that goal, while chasing a long ball Torres pulled up short and suffered a hamstring injury.
In recent times he has shown glimpses of getting back in form, he scored in the 1-0 win for Liverpool against West Brom and also scored for Spain in the 4-0 win in the Euro 2012 qualifier against Liechtenstein.
Just before the start of the season there was immense speculation that Torres would be on his way out of Liverpool, especially because “The Reds” would not be involved in the UEFA Champions’ League this season. Liverpool manager, Roy Hodgson then convinced him to stay and since then Torres has pledged his future to Anfield, at least for the time being.
Hodgson said that Torres is one of the most important players in the team, and considering his injury problems he would like to risk him by playing him in every game. He said that he would use his ace striker wisely.
