Chris Iannetta and Juan Nicasio spark as Colorado Rockies defeat San Diego Padres 6-3 – MLB Update
Colorado Rockies’ catcher, Chris Iannetta and starter Juan Nicasio both were outstanding as Iannetta struck a three-run homer and Nicasio pitched six overriding innings in the Rockies’ 6-3 victory against the San Diego Padres at Coors Field, Colorado on June 14.
The Padres started the game pretty well as they scored one run in the first inning to get a 1-0 lead. Chris Denorfia hit a one-run homer (422 feet) towards right centre-field. Second and third inning went score-less as the batters played lethargic shots towards the field areas.
Fourth inning was competitive for both teams as the Padres scored one run and the Rockies hit three runs. Alberto Gonzalez doubled to deep right-centre and Cameron Maybin posted one run for the Padres at the top of the fourth.
Todd Helton singled to right centre and Chris Nelson posted the first run for the Rockies. The second and third run for the Rockies were taken by Helton and Troy Tulowitzki, respectively. The Rockies went ahead 3-2 at the end of fourth inning.
No run was added by any batter in the fifth inning as the pitchers threw the ball in ideal line. Nicasio pitched with an ERA of 3.38 and gave two runs on six hits including two earned runs. He struck-out nine batters and allowed just one walk on his 108 pitches. Nicasio said, “Feeling more confident with every start. You don't want to be too comfortable out there. In the big leagues, you never want to be too comfortable.”
The Rockies extended their lead 6-2 by posting three runs in the sixth inning. Iannetta struck a solo homer (379 feet) towards left-field while Charlie Blackmon and Ryan Spilborghs both contributed two runs jointly for the Rockies.
Blackmon said, “First big-league butt chewing. We definitely responded well. But as far as I'm concerned, it's not one win and now we can relax. It's one win and now we have to keep the pedal down and keep it going.”
In the seventh and eighth inning, the pitchers controlled the scoring shots of the batters by throwing curveballs. The Padres reduced their lead 6-3 by posting one run in the ninth inning when Chase Headley scored a single run on the drive of Ryan Ludwick to centre-field.
