Chris Iannetta’s tiebreaker gives Colorado Rockies 2-1 victory over New York Mets – MLB Update
Chris Iannetta struck a seventh inning tiebreaking hit to help the Colorado Rockies to a 2-1 victory against the New York Mets at Coors Field, Denver on Monday, May 9.
Chris Capuano pitched seven innings, trying to assert himself, but somehow failed to succeed. The hit that Iannetta had was disconcerting for Capuano. "It was a hanging breaking ball," Capuano said. "I was trying to throw a backdoor breaking ball there,
and it just kind of stayed up in the middle of the plate, right into his swing."
Willie Harris did not capitulate up until the last inning, as he kept moving around to break the Rockies’ lead, but his efforts proved fruitless at the end. "I was trying to play the game," Harris said. "I was just trying to get in scoring position for those
guys. When you sit on the bench for a while, you want to do something to help the team. I guess I picked a bad spot."
Jhoulys Chacin showed surprising disappointment despite the fact that he alone managed to strengthen the Rockies’ defence with his amazing pitches. The fact that he only allowed one run did not serve as a source of satisfaction for him. “Today I didn't have
my best stuff," Chacin said. "I really lost the release point of my fastball, but my breaking ball was really good.”
Capuano gave up two hits in the second inning, but did not allow any run to make a good start for the Mets. However, Rockies’ starting pitcher, Chacin was equally effective, as both did not allow their rival hitters to score.
Rockies’ Dexter Fowler hit the first run for his team in the fifth inning. The run came after Capuano gave up two hits, enabling Fowler to give the Rockies their first run. The 1-0 Rockies’ lead did not last for long.
Jason Bay soon scored a single, levelling the score in the sixth inning. Bay seemed to have brought things under control for the Mets, but Iannetta soon transformed the shape of the game.
Iannetta homered to left to not only break the tie but also took the lead to 2-1. The lead was successfully defended first by Rafael Betancourt who replaced Matt Reynolds and then by Huston Street who pitched in the ninth inning to give a 2-1 victory to
Colorado against the Mets.
