Chris John to defend his WBA Super World featherweight title against Japanese Shoji Kimura – Boxing News
Chris John, the current WBA Super World featherweight champion, is scheduled to defend his title for the fourth time against Japanese Shoji Kimura, the former Japanese super bantamweight champion, in a 12-round bout which will be held on May 5, 2012.
The Indonesian proud will defend his title at the Marina Bay Sands situated in Singapore, and the event will be televised live on Australia’s Main Event channel.
The above duo will headline the pay-per-view. The Saturday night showdown will be co-headlined by the International Boxing Organization featherweight title bout between Daud Cino Yordan and Lorenzo Villanueva.
Chris and Shoji recently met at the pre-bout press conference and vowed to put forth boxing fanatics an impressive show. John, 32, has been in a total 48 bouts and interestingly has never lost even a single one.
Chris has won 22 of his 46 bouts by knocking out opponents cold. John has collected just two draw decision in his career and has been ruling the featherweight division for long. John grabbed his WBA super world gold after collecting a unanimous decision
win over Rocky Juarez and since then has defended its successfully against Fernando David Saucedo, Daud Cino Yordan, and Stanyslav Merdov.
The Indonesian proud resides at the fifth rank in the world rankings and has not only proudly held the WBA World featherweight title but also defended it several times. Chris grabbed the WBA title after nailing Osamu Sato and since then has defended it in
10 consecutive bouts.
His opponent, Shoji, 34, has been in a total 30 bouts and emerged victorious in 24. He has nailed nine of his opponents by knocking them out cold. During the media interaction, Chris vowed that this time he will collect a knockout win in a unique way and
by executing a jab that he has been practicing recently.
Chris commented, “I am targeting a KO or at least a TKO (technical knockout) victory against Kimura. I’ve been practising a special punch with my trainer... that I call the dragon fire punch, which will surely knock Kimura out.”
At the same time, Shoji also put forth his resolve and remarked that he will give Chris the fight of his life. Kimura stated, “Chris John’s people want a war, they want a fighter who will come to fight. I am that fighter. One of us will be knocked out, this
fight will not go the distance. I will be the new champion.”
The bout will be a classic one since both men are top-notch pugilists who have achieved much in their illustrious careers. Shoji recently broke his two-bout lose streak and collected an impressive split decision win over Ryol Li Lee and therefore is willing
to continue his win streak.
