Chris Johnson’s double RBIs help Houston Astros defeat San Diego Padres, 7-4 – MLB Update
Houston Astros’ third baseman, Chris Johnson was outstanding with the bat as he went 2-for-4 and scored two runs including solo homer in the Astros, 7-4 victory against the San Diego Padres at Petco Park, San Diego on June 2.
Both teams were unable to contribute even a single run during the first inning. The Astros opened their scoring account in the second inning when Johnson singled to right centre-field, Jeff Keppinger scored one run and Brett Wallace rapidly moved to second
base. The third inning was full of scoring opportunities for both sides as the Astros got five runs and the Padres got off the mark by adding two runs.
Carlos Lee hit a ground rule double to deep centre-field and Clint Barmes posted one run. Hunter Pence scored the second run of the inning when Wallace was grounded out to second base. Lee, Keppinger and Johnson each posted three runs collectively to complete
a five-run campaign.
On the other side, Chase Headley singled to deep right-field and Tim Stauffer scored one run. The second run for the Padres was taken by Jason Bartlett on the single-run shot of Ryan Ludwick towards deep right-centre. The Astros were leading 6-2 at the end
of third inning, as the fourth inning was score-less for both teams.
In the fifth inning, the Astros got a 7-2 lead when Johnson struck a one-run homer (397 feet) to left-field. He commented on his homer and said, “It's one of those parks where you try not to think about hitting the ball out of the ballpark here just because
it's a big yard, but he left a changeup out over the plate and I got some backspin on it and got it out.”
No run was taken by any batter in the sixth inning. The Padres posted two runs in the seventh inning to reduce the lead 7-4 when Kyle Phillips and Logan Forsythe both singled on the sacrifice fly of Chris Denorfia and Eric Patterson, respectively. The score-card
was unmoved in the last two innings of the game.
The Astros’ starter, Bud Norris was little bit shaky with the ball as he pitched six innings with an ERA of 3.95 and gave four runs on six hits including four earned runs. He struck-out six batters and allowed two walks on his 111 pitches.
