Chris Mullin tips Donnie Walsh to make a comeback – NBA Update
Most people didn’t agree with New York Knicks owner James Dolan’s decision to relieve Donnie Walsh of his duties. Chris Mullin is one of them and he believes Donnie Walsh would get back into the business if he wanted to.
Donnie Walsh was the President of Basketball Operations at the New York Knicks till the end of last season. Walsh has now been reduced to a consultant after he grew differences with Dolan on some issues, in particular over the
trade to bring Carmelo Anthony to the Knicks.
Walsh didn’t want to give half his roster in exchange for Carmelo and Chauncey Billups from the Denver Nuggets; however Dolan desperately wanted the super star. In the end Dolan had his way and now the Knicks are desperately short
of depth.
Walsh’s previous good work was overlooked by the owner when he made the decision to fire him. Many people believe Walsh wasn’t treated right after he had cut the bloated wage bill in half, created by the disastrous Isiah Thomas
regime, and also taken the Knicks back to the playoffs. Overall he enjoys a great reputation within the game, so Chris Mullin found no reason to doubt that he would be back in the game.
“He’s as good as anyone,” Mullin said Monday. “I think it’s just a matter of if he wants to do it. And what I know of Donnie, he’s a worker. He likes to work. That’s part of his makeup. I haven’t talked to him about it but if you
asked me I would think (Walsh will work again).”
Chris Mullin has known Donnie Walsh for a long time and the newly inducted Hall of Fame is apparently close to him. Mullin, who won two Olympic Gold Medals as a player, has experience of the working in the front office from his
time at the Golden State Warriors.
A lot of people agree with his point of view, but there are still unanswered questions over Donnie Walsh. It is argued that Walsh, who has had three surgeries in the last three years, cannot continue to do an effective job at 70
years old.
Chris though doesn’t agree with that assertion and says Donnie’s health is not as much of an issue as it has been brought up to be. Walsh is a fighter and he is healthy enough to take charge of an NBA franchise,
“He’s getting healthy,” Mullin said. “He was never as bad as people let on.”
If Donnie does make himself available next year, quite a number of teams could line up for his signature because of the good work he has done in the past.
