Question:

Chris Osgood/Detroit Red Wings question?

Chris Osgood did not begin the playoffs as the starter in Detroit this season but the team has obviously been on a tear since he took over for Hasek.

First question: Is he a contender for the Conn Smythe at this point?

Second question: If he were to continue his current run and somehow manage to continue his shutout streak for the remainder of this game and the next two would he be a lock for the Conn Smythe or just a contender?

  1. In my opinion goalies always get first looks for Conn Smythe. which fair or not, they do the hardest job out there and deserve the credit.

Osgood at this point is a huge contender for the smythe right now, if he can finish this game with a win.

His biggest challenge will be going back to pittsburgh and locking those two games out.

if that were to happen, Osgood is a write in for the Conn Smythe, i'm sorry to Hank and Datsyuk, but Osgood was shoved into the starting role pretty suddenly (i dont think many expected it until hasek started sucking) and then he carries the team to the cup. so i think it's a lock.

I also think it would have hasek seriously considering retirement..

  2. He is defently a contender for that trophy he is just a flat out BEAST.  i think if he continues hes winning streak then easily the winner

  3. Absolutely if he keeps this up.  However it will be tough to give it to him when Pittsburgh doesn't get any shots!

  4. If the crappy Pens cant score, i would give Lindstrom the Conn Smythe but  give Osgood a lot of credit. Lindstrom has been the best all around player in the playoffs so far!

  5. How could he not? With the Pens lethal offense he is playing amazingly but Lubers did you just put the jinx on Ozzie?I remember asking a question at the start of the semis when he was on fire and wondered if he's playing better then Mikey Vernon in 97.

  6. yes

  7. yes to both ... so what would i say to get the best answer its kind of a yes or no question.... more details? hmmmm..... well i gotta go... i kinda would rather focus on the game. so yeah

  8. 1. yes. the Conn Smythe award tends to put the most emphasis on the most recent round.

    2. absolutely. especially since Detroit has been spreading out their offense. frankly, it's like an unstated way of crediting Detroit's entire defense if Osgood gets the C/S trophy. it's not like he's facing 40+ shots. he's stopping the shots that get thru because of Detroit's system.

  9. oh yeah he has been great for detroit

    haha ozz bad.....not anymore

  10. You bet. If he managed a 4 game shutout - sweep how could they not award him the trophy?

I don't see that happening, but I think if Detroit takes the Cup, he has an excellent chance.

  11. Ozzie is right up there in contention for the Conn Smythe indeed. Id he does continue, which is not very likely, He will surely be a lock indeed

  12. Ozzzz Baddd...

    Ozzzz Baddd...

    Ozzzz Baddd...

Thats what we use to chant in Colorado. Haha, yea, he is definitely better then Hasek.

  13. how funny.....ozz bad....i remember that...he was terrible back then.

obviously all year he's been the best

    and yes maybe

  14. If this keeps up, he's a lock for the Conn Smythe.  Even if he doesn't get any more shutouts. There is precedent here. 1983 Cup Finals where everyone expected Gretzky and Edmonton in their first Cup finals to steamroll a veteran Islanders team, but it was NY that swept the Oilers with Billy Smith winning the Conn Smythe, allowing only 6 goals in the 4 game sweep, with one shutout.

  15. If he manages to pull a four game shut out, then he WILL win the Conn Smythe. That is unless somebody manages to rack up 10 goals. Even if Osgood gives up a goal a game, he should at least be considered.

  16. I think so.  I think he's the top contender at the moment, to be honest.
