Chris Paul Stresses the Need to Protect Future NBA Players during Lockout Talks – NBA Update
With the current National Basketball Association (NBA) lockout in effect, the players and the owners have taken a strong stand on their respective positions. From a third person’s perspective, it may seem that both parties are
trying to earn as much money as they possibly can.
However, a recent interview has seen Chris Paul enter the limelight and give this issue a whole new outlook. Chris Paul has urged the NBA players that the interests of future Basketball professionals should be protected in whatever
Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) is agreed upon.
In an interview, Chris Paul said that although the players despise seeing a lockout take place, they cannot let the owners take undue advantage of the players, as this will cause the future generations to suffer much more than
them.
“There are so many players that came before us — Michael Jordan, Patrick Ewing — who got the game to where it is today. And what about the kids in high school who aspire to be in the NBA? We don’t believe in making sure it’s
OK for ourselves now, but more difficult for them later.” He said.
Chris Pauls’ concern stems from the viewpoint of a moral responsibility. He feels that the players need to protect the future generation of Basketball pros because they do not have a voice right now and are unable to express their
concerns.
According to Paul, all current players want to play the game, because they know how hard it is for the fans to bear such a lockout and the possible cancellation of an NBA season. Paul insisted that on the player’s part, there
has been no intent to fight or bicker with the owners, but at the same time, they will not let owners take undue advantage.
The motivational factor behind Pauls’ stance is his two year old son. He wants to struggle for him so that when he grows up and searches for a contract, he can proudly claim that his father fought for him.
However, all this is really hurting the fans. The fans are the building blocks of any great team or individual alike. They are the creators, the owners are not. This is what players like Chris Paul and others seem to be overlooking.
They are trying to safeguard the future by damaging the present. In short, the happiness of the fans is being compromised and all this seems more than a tad unfair to the people who are the reason behind the existence of the players as well as the National
Basketball Association.
Although Chris Paul is consciously trying to fulfil what he deems as his ethical responsibility, he might be overlooking a very important aspect of the game i.e. the fans.
