Chris Paul not too fussed about his position at the Los Angeles Clippers - NBA Update
Just few days before the Los Angeles Clippers’ season opener against the Golden State Warriors, newly acquired veteran Chauncey Billups had made clear that he would play as a point guard and not the shooting guard.
Coach Vinny Del Negro responded and the Clippers used the combination of Chris Paul and Billups in the Christmas game. The strategy had proven successful in the preseason games against Los Angeles Lakers; however in the season
opener against the Warriors, although Paul and Billups both produced healthy tallies, there were few instances when it looked like both were confused about their role.
Paul however played down the misunderstanding;
"It doesn't matter," Paul said Tuesday, one day before the Clippers' second game of the season against the San Antonio Spurs. "It doesn't matter when you have two guys like me and Chauncey because we have the opportunity to attack
from different spots on the floor”
Paul, who is arguably the best point guard in the league, has been in such situations before as well and he managed it just perfectly. Last season, after his old previous team New Orleans Hornets acquired Jarrett Jack and employed
him as the point for the first month of the season, Paul played as a shooting guard and has revealed that he actually liked playing at that position.
"I actually like it," Paul said. "I actually enjoy it. This way, the defense can't always look at you and know you're the guy."
However, the problem that Coach Negro faces is where to use Mo Williams, the third All-star point guard in the team. Williams was supposed to play as a standby for Paul, before the Clippers picked Billups off waivers. But, with
Billups adding a new dimension to the already powerful Clippers roster having the likes of Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan to go with Paul, Williams’ role has been significantly reduced.
He had 8 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals in 22 minutes of action in the season opener, however had to be taken off with nearly six minutes to go. He looked visibly upset then and there have been rumours that the Clips
might clear out their back court in the next available trade window.
