Chris Robshaw declared player of the year – Rugby News Update
Chris Robshaw, the 25-year-old back-row, the captain of England and the Harlequins, has been named the Player of the Year at the Aviva Premiership Rugby Awards.
There were six players shortlisted for the award, with Robshaw being one of them. He beat competition from Brad Barritt (Saracens), Mike Brown (Harlequins), James Scaysbrook (Exeter Chiefs), Julian Salvi (Leicester Tigers) and Nick Wood (Gloucester Rugby)
to claim the coveted award, a prize he had previously won in the 2008-09 season as well.
Quins' director of rugby, Conor O'Shea, paid tribute to his captain, saying that he truly deserves the award for his play and his personality.
He said, "This award is richly deserved. What I like about him is that no matter which accolades come his way or what he achieves we all know what comes first with Chris is the team."
He further added, "Chris is the sort of guy who'll never get above himself. For him it is all about the team. He wants nothing more than for the team to be successful."
The other coveted prize of Land Rover Discovery of the Season went to Owen Farrell, the 20-year-old fly-half, who is an England colleague of Robshaw’s, and plays his club rugby for the Saracens. He beat competition from Jonathan Joseph (London Irish), Matt
Kvesic (Worcester Warriors), Joe Launchbury (London Wasps), Christian Wade (London Wasps) and Luke Wallace (Harlequins) to claim the prize.
Robshaw and Farrell form the backbone of the new look England team under Stuart Lancaster. The England head coach, Lancaster, wanted to shake things up in the national team after the disappointment in the 2011 Rugby World Cup.
Robshaw was appointed the captain of England at the back of just 53 minutes as an England player that came against Argentina in 2009. After captaining England at the 2012 Six Nations tournament, every person was aware of Robshaw, and his uncomplicated, committed
approach to the team earned him many plaudits. So far he has made 6 appearances for his national team.
Owen Farrell is the son of Andy Farrell, a former player. He made his England debut against Scotland at Murrayfield in the 2012 Six Nations tournament.
