Chris Rodgers shares the second position at the King’s Cup after day one
Chris Rodgers of England carded an eight-under par 64 in the opening round of the King’s Cup, to share the second place on the leaderboard, on Thursday. November 29, 2012.
The tournament is being played at the Singha Park Khon Kaen Golf Club, featuring some of the prominent names on the Asian Tour.
Rodgers, who lost his Asian Tour card last year, got off to a strong start, birdied sixth and the eighth hole to reach the turn in two-under.
Thereafter, he picked up pace and birdied six of the last eight holes that he played, to finish one stroke behind the leader Mardan Mamat of Singapore.
Rodgers now wishes to remain consistent in the remaining three rounds, in a bid to record the second Asian Tour victory of his career.
His only victory on the Asian circuit came at the Pakistan Open in 2008, when he defeated Amandeep Johl and Jeev Milkha Singh with a three-stroke margin.
Talking to the Asian Tour’s official website, he stated that was really disappointed to lose his Asian Tour card last year.
He said that he struggled with his putter, throughout the 2011 golf season. Therefore, he spent plenty of time tweaking his short game. He is now confident to return to the Asian Tour with a victory this week.
“After my win, I got a bit comfortable playing on the Asian Tour and enjoying myself. Last year was a bit of a struggle as I didn’t putt very well and ended up missing my card”.
“You certainly realise you’re missing out a lot and coming back this year with very limited status, it gives you lots of time to practice and reflect,” said Rodgers.
“There’s everything to play for this week and I know I need a big finish. You can’t win a tournament with just one round. ...It is a great start and I hope I can carry this on,” he added.
Supakorn Utaipat, who turned professional earlier this season, also posted an eight-under par score to share the second position with Rodgers. His round included a total of six birdies, along with a sparkling eagle.
