Chris Sale helps Chicago White Sox shutout Minnesota Twins 6-0 – MLB Update
Chicago White Sox annihilated the Minnesota Twins 6-0 at Target Field in Minneapolis, Minnesota on Friday, September 14 in the opening game of their three match series.
Having suffered an embarrassing series loss against Detroit Tigers, the White Sox needed to regroup and fight back and that is exactly what they did in the series opener against the Minnesota Twins. The pitching rotation in particular created all sorts of
problems for the Twins’ batting line-up.
Starting pitcher Chris Sale showed just what he is capable of as he grabbed his 17th win of the season. Striking-out five batters in six scoreless innings, Sale used his fastballs and sliders to great effect.
"Any time he pitches, you feel confident that you're going to have a chance to win the game. Spirits are high," manager Robin Ventura said.
"When you start thinking about things like that you get a little selfish, and what's really important slips away," the 23-year-old Sale said. "I want to play for this team. I'm not trying to win any awards or anything like that. The only award I want is
a big, shiny trophy at the end."
"The ball sometimes disappears," manager Ron Gardenhire said. "That's telling you that the guy has great stuff."
Relief pitchers Brett Myers and Matt Thornton kept the pressure on Minnesota, tossing up two scoreless innings to help White Sox take a 1-0 series lead.
Twins’ starter Esmerling Vasquez took his second loss of the season after he allowed three hits and three runs in just over five innings. Twins’ relief pitchers were also unable to control the flow of runs as the White Sox posted six runs on the board.
Designated hitter Dayan Viciedo provided Chicago with an excellent start as he grounded out to second in the second inning. He then walked in the fourth to extend White Sox’s lead to 4-0.
Alexei Ramirez singled to left in the sixth and Kevin Youkilis smacked a solo home-run to left in the seventh to give White Sox complete control of the situation. David Wise contributed with a sacrifice fly hit to left.
