Chris Smalling, Benoit Assou-Ekotto impress - Fantasy Premier League Team of the Week – Part 2
Many defenders found themselves unable to keep a clean sheet over the frenetic weekend of Barclays Premier League action, which we Fantasy Premier League managers called Gameweek 5.
There were a number of top sides finding themselves on the wrong side of the Win/Loss sheet and one striker in particular who managed to find his scoring boots after a long time and then managing to lose them within the blink of an eye. No prizes for guessing
which blonde haired £50-million valued Chelsea striker we are talking about.
Armand Traore (Queens Park Rangers)
A player who is selected by 0.0% percent of managers on Fantasy Premier League proved that he is not someone who should be ignored as he managed to earn nine points over the weekend. A clean sheet worth four points, an assist worth three points and two points
for Minutes Played, later the defender announced himself on the virtual point scoring stage.
Nine points for a defender is no joke, however, we are still sceptical over how consistent Traore’s point scoring form will be. A flash in the pan, or the start of a new Nicky Shorey? Only time will tell.
Chris Smalling (Manchester United)
Level with Traore on nine points, the Manchester United defender defied the size implied by his last name as he leapt above every other player on the field and found the back of the Chelsea net to send 60,000 strong Manchester United supporters at Old Trafford
into raptures.
While that may be a tad on the dramatic side, it was enough to earn him a big six points. Big, because it was a crucial goal in a top of the table clash. The goal was enough to earn the defender a one-point bonus and he managed to stay on the pitch just
long enough to earn the two points for minutes played.
With some of the senior players from Manchester United squad absent, Smalling may just be one player to watch out for in the coming weeks.
Benoit Assou-Ekotto (Tottenham Hotspur)
While we usually limit the amount of defenders who make it to the team of the week to four players, we thought it would be unfair to leave out the Tottenham wingback, who like Traore and Smalling earned himself 9 points over the weekend.
The Bonus player of this week, is a new accolade we are giving out, and for this week it goes to Benoit.
Causing havoc and devastation at White Hart Lane against their closest rivals over the past few seasons, Ekotto was both a wall in front of the back four, as well a constant pain in Liverpool’s backside at the same time.
With an assist worth three points to his name, a very well kept clean sheet and two points for his 90-minute contribution, the Spurs player landed himself and every manager who chose him with a nice total of nine points.
