Chris Stewart shines in Giants’ 4-2 victory over Diamond Backs - MLB update
Giants catcher, Chris Stewart’s impressive performance at bat helped the San Francisco Giants to a 4-2 victory over The Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday. This is the second win for the Giants in their last three outings in spring training, while the D-Backs
continued their miserable run in spring training with three in four games.
The two runs lead provided by Stewart in the second innings of the games proved enough for the Giants to seal the victory. They were leading the game by 3-1 before Russel Branyan of D-Backs eventually cut down the lead to 3-2 in the next innings. In the
sixth innings Stewart and Culberson hit back to back doubles to earn a run for Giants that remained decisive till the end.
D-backs’ opening pitcher, Zach Duke, continued his poor form in spring trainings. In his two innings pitched in the game he went for seven hits and gave up three runs without striking out a single Giants’ player. He was hit 13 times in his four innings pitched
in the spring training season.
The most impressive and surprising performance came from Mitchell Owings of the D-backs. He had three strikes in the third scoreless innings for the Giants with only one hit. Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson was quite happy with the player's performance.
"He should really feel good about the way he threw," Gibson said. "We want to get him pitching and throwing the ball properly. I will have to get him an at bat pretty soon."
Jonathan Sanchez, starting pitcher for the Giants, pitched three inning in which he was hit four times giving up two runs with three strike outs.
"My slider was nasty," Sanchez said. "I was in the zone with all my pitches. I gotta work on my split. It hung a little. Getting ahead with it is fine, but for a strikeout, I need to work on it."
In batting stats, Stewart was all over the place. He was at bat three times in which he hit two and drove in two runs. Freddy Sanchez also got two hits, while designated hitter Pablo Sandoval also had one run to his name. For the Diamond Backs, Russell Branyan
got two hits and drove in a run, while Miguel Monter also drove in run.
The Giants will play their next game against division rivals, Colorado Rockies. Right handed pitcher, Matt Cain, will miss the game against the Rockies due to inflammation in his right elbow. In the absence of Cain, Veteran right-hander Ryan Vogelson is
expected to be given a chance. Vogelson last played against the D-backs at Salt River Fields in which he pitched two scoreless innings.
On the other hand Diamond backs will play their next ball game against the San Diego Padres. Top prospect Jarrod Parker will make his second appearance of spring training after pitching a scoreless innings in his first outing on Monday.
