Chris Sutton leaves Lincoln City
Former Chelsea and Blackburn Rovers striker Chris Sutton has resigned as manager of Lincoln City due to personal reasons.
Assistant manager Ian Pearce has also left the League Two side and the Imps will immediately start to look for a successor.
Lincoln are currently in 20th position and have only managed two wins so far this season. Last season Sutton only managed to finish in 20th position and 10 points above the relegation places.
This was Sutton’s first managerial post and he failed to change the clubs fortunes over the past season. He has played under managers like Kenny Dalglish and Martin O’Neill during his football career.
Sutton was given a chance at Sincil Bank and the Imps fans had hoped that a high profile ex-player like Sutton would be able to recruit some big names to the club. The board had also hoped that his combative style as a player would translate into his managerial
position.
Sutton took over at Lincoln from Peter Jackson who had also failed to establish Lincoln as a force in League Two. A number of poor results led to Sutton’s appointment, but the manager’s inexperience has seemed to be a problem at the club.
Lincoln have had serious problems so far this season. Attendances have fallen and the team has failed to progress under the manager.
A lack of money is also an issue and the board may find it difficult to recruit a new manager who can turn around the club's fortunes.
Former Imps manager Steve Thompson told BBC Lincolnshire: "I think for Chris Sutton it's probably been coming. The results, the dwindling crowds and they've not improved in 12 months so I wouldn't say I was surprised,” said Thompson. "Sutton took over at
a difficult time from Jackson, kept Lincoln in the league but finished 20th and 12 months down the line, they're still 20th.”
