Chris Tucker and Eduardo Fernandes qualify for Round 3 at Sooruz Lacanau Pro
America’s Chris Tucker and Portugal’s Eduardo Fernandes secured their spot in the third round (Round of 96) at the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 5-Star Sooruz Lacanau Pro after claiming top honours in their respective Round 2 (Round of 128)
heats that went down at the Grande Plage in Lacanau, France, on Tuesday, August 14.
Reunion Island’s Kieran Bulard accompanied Tucker into the third round after clinching runner-up place during the 11th heat. America’s Keto Burns and Hawaii’s Dylan Goodale got ejected from the event after finishing in third and fourth position
respectively.
The 12the heat saw Hawaii’s Dege O’Connell advance to the third round alongside Fernandes following his second-place finish. Basque Country’s Jatyr Berasaluce and America’s Dylan Kowalski rounded out the bottom-two position, which led to their elimination
from the competition.
The three-to-four waves on offer at the main event site seemed pretty promising, but the strong winds accompanying them presented the surfing talent from around the globe with a tough challenge.
Tucker found himself pitted against Bulard, Burns and Goodale in a four-man battle for the Round 3 spot during the 11th heat of Round 2. The American surfer got off to a slow start, but gradually built momentum to eventually post a 5.00 on the
scoreboard half-way through the heat. He immediately followed it up with a 6.50-point ride, thus finishing with a decisive heat-total of 11.50 points.
Bulard was able to extend his life in the event as well after securing runner-up position through a heat-total of 10.14 points, which comprised of a 5.27 and 4.87-point ride.
Burns finished in third place with a heat-total of 9.87 points, while Goodale had to settle for bottom-position after registering a heat-total of 9.27 points.
The 12th heat saw Fernandez put on a powerful performance to get the back of O’Connell, Berasaluce and Kowalski. The Portuguese surfer earned an impressive 8.33 off his first business-wave and went on to back it up with a 4.27-point ride, thus
finishing with a decisive heat-total of 12.60 points.
O’Connell earned a 5.33 and 6.00 off his best-two waves to finish with a resultant heat-total of 11.33 points, which proved sufficient to put him in runner-up place and take him through into the next round.
Berasaluce finished in third place with a heat-total of 11.16 points, while Kowalski finished fourth after registering a two-wave total of 9.64 points.
