Chris Walker-Hebborn captures Men’s 200m back-stroke title - British Gas ASA National
Chris Walker-Hebborn of Ellesmere won the gold medal of the Men’s 200m back-stroke on the second day of the 2011 British Gas ASA National Championships, in Sheffield.
The ASA meet is focused towards identifying elite swimmers of British Swimming, as the gold medallist of each event will represent their country at the 2011 Shanghai World Championships, this July.
Walker-Hebborn won the gold medal of the 200m event in an astonishing time of 1 minute and 57.20 seconds. He was followed by Guildford’s Marco Loughran, who completed his four-lap swim in a second fastest time of 1 minute and 58.34 seconds. The next spot
on the podium was secured by Ryan Bennett of Preston, who appeared on the finishing wall as the third fastest swimmer, by touching the wall in a time of 2 minutes and 00.42 seconds.
The national champion displayed a wonderful swim in the first lap of the race, where he completed his swim in a superb time of 27.46 seconds. Loughran and Bennett ended their first laps in the second and third fastest times of 27.82 and 28.23 seconds, respectively.
The swimmers prolonged their positions in the second lap, where Walker-Hebborn posted a fastest time of 57.17 seconds for the first-half of the race. Loughran also retained his spot and clocked a second fastest time of 58.09 against Bennett’s 58.53 seconds.
In the third lap, the gold medallist continued his dominance and was ahead of his following swimmers with a gap of more than one second. He then maintained his lead in the final lap, staying 1.14 seconds ahead of Loughran and posted a time of 1:57.20 minutes
for the gold medal.
Charlie Boldison of Barnet and Scott Hathaway of Loughborough University wrapped up their swims with a timing of 2:00.98 and 2:01.34 minutes, for the fourth and fifth fastest spots, respectively. Xavier Mohammed of Cardiff concluded his swim in the sixth
fastest place, by posting a time of 2 minutes and 01.43 seconds.
The session concluded after the final event, while more trials will be conducted in the remaining days of the championships.
