Chris Weidman: I know I can beat Anderson Silva – UFC News
While President of the Ultimate Fighting Championship Dana White believes middleweight champion Anderson Silva is the best in the business, middleweight number one contender Chris Weidman thinks he can defeat the champion. According to Weidman, Silva is
trying to avoid fighting him because the champion knows he will be defeated.
“He can downplay me all he wants,” said Weidman in an interview with MMAJunkie.com. “He can say whatever he wants about me, but I beat two top-5 guys in the world. Nobody has ever done that in the history of the UFC. Now I'm set to fight Dec. 29 against
Tim Boetsch, and that's going to be three top-5 guys in a row if I'm able to beat him. There's no one that's ever done that.”
Both Silva and Weidman are undefeated fighters. Silva defeated ‘The American Psycho’ Stephan Bonnar via knockout past Saturday at UFC 153 to escalate to 16 wins without any losses. Weidman stands with 5 wins and 0 losses. The American fighter was present
in Rio de Janeiro where Silva defeated Bonnar in the first round. Weidman was impressed with Silva’s performance yet claimed that he can end the Brazilian’s reign as champion.
“I took a lot of risks to get where I am this short into my career,” he added.
“I know I can beat Anderson.”
According to Weidman, he is confident that he can defeat Silva in the cage. It should be noted here that Chris Weidman is the number one contender for the crowd according to President Dana White.
Weidman was waiting for a title shot at Silva just when the champion announced he would not fight until 2013. Weidman accepted the decision and went onto schedule a fight against Tim Boetsch in December. However, later on, he was disappointed to know that
the ‘Spider’ changed his mind and accepted a fight against retiring Stephan Bonnar.
Now, Weidman believes it is about time Silva should give him the opportunity. Weidman asserts he put himself in short-notice fights in the past to reach the level he is at right now, and he wants to make something out of it by grabbing the title from Silva.
