Chris Weidman: I think I am a big risk for Anderson Silva on paper – UFC News
UFC middleweight contender Chris Weidman is disheartened by UFC’s decision of setting up an encounter between Anderson Silva and Stephan Bonnar. Weidman was announced the number one contender in the division and so he was hoping a shot at Silva soon. However,
Silva instead went onto face Bonnar, who were nowhere even near the mark.
Silva had previously declined Weidman’s offer for a fight saying he will not fight until 2013. Now, the champion will be facing Bonnar at UFC 153.
“This whole time him and his manager were very dead set on not fighting until 2013. They didn't really give a reason, but they just wanted to wait until 2013. And I thought that was a little fishy that all of the sudden now they pick up a fight like it's
no big deal,” said Weidman.
“I just think I'm a big risk for him on paper. I'm a good wrestler with good jiu-jitsu, which I don't think he's really seen anybody like me with the athleticism I have and my length and everything. I have a lot of tools. On paper, I'm a bad matchup for
him. But I think Anderson would like a challenge ... but I think his managers more than him are trying to keep him away,” he added.
Chris Weidman, Michael Bisping and Brian Stann were three fighters looking forward to a title shot. However, Silva’s manager declined the notion saying the champion will not fight until 2013. He even added that the only fighter Silva is willing to face in
his next fight is welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre. Considering Silva’s stance, Weidman moved on but now he feels disappointed.
According to Weidman, the only reason why Silva is ignoring him is the fact that he is a threat to the Brazilian’s crown. On the other hand, Michael Bisping is in the line as well to get a shot at Bisping. Weidman is now scheduled to face Tim Boetsch. Winner
of the fight will be facing Michael Bisping, as the Briton defeated Brian Stann past Saturday at UFC 152.
A fight between Bisping and winner of Weidman vs. Boetsch will decide who will face Anderson Silva next.
