Chris Weidman believes he is being singled out by Silva’s camp – UFC News
Highly talented mixed martial artist Chris Weidman believes UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva is avoiding him because he is a threat for the Brazilian Spider’s throne.
In his recent interview with ESPN.com, Chris Weidman spoke about his chances of scoring a title shot at the 37-year-old champion Silva. According to Weidman, he is extremely talented, which is a major concern for Silva’s camp.
“I'm going to say that's probably the biggest reason. [Silva's] management has kind of tried to downplay me, because honestly I am a stylistic nightmare for that guy,” said Weidman, believing Silva’s camp is singling him out just because he is good enough
to take the champion down.
“No question about it. On paper, Mark Munoz is a lot harder fight for me. He's got good wrestling, so I could have been stuck on my feet, and he has good hands, so I could have got knocked out. So I took that fight knowing it was a tough challenge. Anderson
Silva? I've got better wrestling, better jiiu-jitsu, so I have a lot more on my side,” he added.
Weidman scored an impressive victory over Mark Munoz past July at UFC on Fuel TV 4 in San Jose. Following his victory, Weidman was looking forward to a title shot, as he believes he has achieved the status of being the number contender in the division. Unfortunately,
to his disappointment, Silva’s camp declined the notion of the Brazilian mixed martial artist fighting Weidman, claiming they are looking forward to a match against Georges St-Pierre.
Silva’s camp is of the view that young fighters such as Weidman and Michael Bisping are inexperienced enough to gauge the Spider’s in-ring movement, which is why they want to go for a fighter who can give Silva tough time in the ring.
Silva scored a second round knockout victory over Chael ‘The American Gangster’ Sonnen last month. Sonnen is considered as the only fighter who has come close enough to defeat Silva yet he could not. Since Silva has defeated Bisping to become the number
one contender, Silva’s camp believes Weidman and Bisping are ‘kids’ in front of the champion.
Weidman is still insisting on a title shot but no update from Silva’s camp has been received yet.
