Chris Weidman shocked over Bonnar fighting Silva – UFC News
It seems like the injury bug has hit UFC hard, and not just the officials are disappointed even the fighters are. Unlike boxing, UFC has always been a straight-forward selection arena but no more. Now, it seems like fights are being made on the basis of
availability and not merit. Recently, it was announced that middleweight champion Anderson Silva would defend his title against Stephan Bonnar, and not Chris Weidman, who supposedly was the number one contender according to President of UFC Dana White.
“I was a little shocked, confused, disappointed,” said Weidman on Tuesday’s edition of “UFC Tonight” on Fuel TV. “I had actually had just ended up getting elbow surgery about a week ago ... and the same week I find out Anderson Silva is now fighting Stephan
Bonnar in UFC 153. It's tough.”
Last month, President Dana White revealed that Chris Weidman is the number one contender for the crown but then he fixed a meeting between Silva and Bonnar. Weidman, who has been repeatedly calling out Anderson Silva, was shocked to know about the scenario.
Even Anderson Silva came up saying that he will not be fighting until 2012. According to Silva’s camp back then, the middleweight champion was only interested in an encounter with welterweight titlist Georges St-Pierre. Michael Bisping, Chris Weidman and
Brian Stann were the fighters trying to get their hands on Silva but they all were disappointed to know they will not get a shot until next year.
“He's going to be making a couple million dollars on odds I've never even seen before. So it's a smart move for him. All power to him. It's just disappointing for me, and I just need to keep moving forward and hoping for the best.”
“This whole time him and his manager were very dead set on not fighting until 2013.”
Weidman believes the only reason why Silva and his camp members are avoiding him is that he is a threat to the Brazilian’s middleweight crown. According to Weidman, Silva is avoiding him to prolong his reign as champion and his undefeated streak in the UFC.
