Chris Weidman wants to fight winner of Bisping vs. Stann – UFC News
Chris Weidman has been trash-talking recently for Michael Bisping, trying to make his way in the top contender’s list for middleweight champion Anderson Silva. Now, the middleweight American mixed martial artist has revealed that he wants to fight the winner
of Michael Bisping vs. Brian Stann, which takes place at UFC 152 in September.
“I don't want them to try to leapfrog me like that. I want that winner, and that would be a true No. 1 contender fight,” said Weidman in an interview to MMAjunkie.com.
Weidman, who has a history of recurring injuries, wants to end them once and for all. It should be noted here that Weidman challenged middleweight champion Anderson Silva earlier this year but his offer was rejected. Silva’s camp believes Weidman is not
a potential opponent for Silva. Therefore, Silva, along with his camp, is looking forward to a fight against Georges St-Pierre.
“If the UFC offered me that fight, I'm definitely taking it. One problem is, from my point of view, that Demian Maia and Munoz both had a bigger name and had a higher ranking than Belcher does. So it's like, am I going backward by fighting him? I don't know,”
he added.
For now, Weidman has no option but to wait. Briton fighter Michael Bisping and American Brian Stann are looking forward to a title shot at Silva as well. All three fighters are in the same boat. However, Weidman is not yet in the official list, as he is
not scheduled for a fight anytime soon. Bisping has already revealed that he has been promised by officials of getting a title shot if he defeats Stann in an impressive manner.
Weidman, who believes Bisping does not have what it takes to go the extra mile, is quite curious to know when he is being lined up for a number one contender match. If Bisping wins against Stann, he might move on with a shot at Silva, shattering Weidman’s
dreams of trying his luck.
The only way for Weidman to get on is to prove his mettle against a top UFC fighter to gain a title shot.
