Chris Wettengel edges past Arthur Karagezian into second qualifying round – Tiburon Challenger 2011
American, Chris Wettengel, overcomes his country mate, Arthur Karagezian, in the first qualifying round of Tiburon Challenger held in California on October 8th. Teenager, Karagezian, tried his best but his efforts went
in vain as Wettengel proved way smarter than him. Wettengel surmounted the resistance of his fellow country mate and sealed the victory in an hour and forty-two minutes with a score of 7-5, 6-3.
Wettengel started off the proceedings in great style winning the initial games of the first-set but teenager came back strongly to square things off with five sets apiece. Wettengel was much better with his serve accuracy and didn’t
show any nerves throughout the game. Karagezian, on the other hand, was a bit clumsy with his serve accuracy and did unforced errors that cost him the first set. Four double-faults and just once success from five break-points rounds up his lapse of concentration.
Wettengel was very prolific throughout the set and forced Karagezian to work hard for each point.
Pressure and fatigue were clearly visible on the teenager’s face. A little cameo run in the midst of the first set was not good enough for him to trounce Wettengel who hung on and finally managed to wrap up the first set with 7-5.
He won 78 points from a total of 143 points played in the set and that counts for a massive 55% points winning rate.
Karagezian couldn’t recover from the first-set trail and was outclassed in every department by his opponent. The length of the first set seemed to have tired the teenager who was moving hopelessly across the pitch. Wettengel capitalized
on his first set victory and continued his sublime form in the second set. He played all kinds of shots and was hardly challenged by his opponent. Karagezian did manage to win three games in the second set but that was just a mere consolation for the teenager.
It was a tame performance by the teenager. However, given his level of experience, it was a good effort by the teenager and he will definitely have many more opportunities in the future. Each failure adds to his experience pool
and this match would teach him the essence of playing in big tournaments and handling pressure situations with calm nerves.
Surprisingly, there were no aces in the whole match and Wettengel who is known for his power play couldn’t impress with his fierce serves. This is a major concern for the American as it seems like he has lost touch in his favourite
part of the game.
