Chris Williams lifts his maiden title of the Brunei Senior Masters - European Senior Tour Update
The European Senior Tour event of Abderdeen Brunei Senior Masters ended yesterday at the par-71, Empire Hotel and Country Club in Brunei. It was the veteran from South Africa, Chris Williams who emerged victorious with a spectacular final round score of
seven-under par, 64. He won by a margin of just one stroke over his nearest opponent Sang-ho Choi of Korea.
Williams who has been playing on the Senior Tour but with not much success posted his first career victory in this event of European Senior Tour. His final day score clearly shows that he was all geared up before the final round started. The South African
started off with an eagle on the par-5, 2nd and from thereon never looked shy of attacking the pin on every hole. The eagle was followed up by seven birdies and two bogeys. Two drop shots came on the par-3, 4th and the par-4, 17th.
This was his maiden win and he was overwhelmed with his final round score.
The joyous winner after his round said, “Winning this tournament has been a big relief for me as I have finished in top-10 places last year. I will always remember this win as the toughest. Critics have always been there but I finally proved myself today
on the field. This win is also special as I competed against the players like Sandy Lyle and former Ryder Cup member Ian Woosnam.”
Korean Choi needed a birdie on the finishing par-4, 18th to face the winner Williams in a play-off, but missed a 12-foot long putt, as he had five birdies and a single bogey marked on his card. The only bogey came on the par-3, 7th
where his tee shot ended in greenside bunker. It turned out be a costly bogey at the end of the round for the Korean who finished one shot behind the champion. Choi had a final round of four-under par, 67 and had to be content with the second position, as
his total three day aggregate score was eleven-under par, 202
Australian Mike Harwood finished the tournament with a moderate round of two-under par, 69. His card showed four birdies followed up by two drop shots on hole numbers 9 and 13. Harwood being an experienced and seasoned campaigner was expected to show some
brilliance on the course, but his bogeys let him down. His total three day aggregate score was nine-under par, 204.
The two-round leader Jamnian Chitprasong of Thailand looked under pressure on the final day, as his card clearly shows that there was no momentum in his swing. Chitprasong had a disastrous final round of two-over par, 73. There were only two birdies marked
on his card followed up by two bogeys and a double-bogey. As misery continued with the overnight leader, he double-bogeyed the final par-4, 18th where his tee shot was way off the fairway. The Thai golfer was very much disappointed from his final
round and is hoping to make a comeback in the next tournament. He finished the tournament with a score of eight-under par, 205.
The defending champion from Thailand Boonchu Ruangkit finished tied at the eleventh spot with three other players. He had a moderate final round of two-under par, 69 but it was not enough for him to be among the top-5 on the leader board.
