Chris Williams off to a promising start at the French Riviera Masters
Chris Williams bogeyed two of the last three holes on Friday, which restrained him from taking the outright lead, heading into the last two rounds of the French Riviera Masters, at the Terre Blanche Resort and Golf Club.
After turning professional in 1978, Williams won a total of 15 events in different parts of the world. His only victory on the European Seniors Tour came in the 2011 Aberdeen Brunei Senior Masters.
This week, he plans to add another title to his resume, through a promising display of the game on the weekend.
The dual nationality holder – he holds citizenship of England and South Africa – got off to a brilliant start, as he eagled the very first hole that he played.
He then added two birdies on the fifth and eighth hole to surge to the top of the leaderboard, early in the round.
The back nine of the course also witnessed him make a good start, as he recorded a birdie on the 12th hole for a five-under par score.
However, he failed to keep the momentum going into the final moments of the round and conceded bogeys on the 16th and the 18th hole. As a result, he slipped down the leaderboard and shared the third position.
“It was a great way to start,” he said. “I hit an unusually long drive - much longer than I was supposed to hit it – and then a little three iron into the green, which came up just short, and I chipped my third shot straight into the hole”.
“Sometimes you can start too fast though and it can make you a bit unsettled, but I played very well until the last couple of holes when I missed the fairway. That puts pressure on your iron shots, and I actually made a lucky bogey at the last with a good
putt from 12 feet,” he added.
In the meantime, Angel Franco recorded a four-under par 68 and surged to the top of the leaderboard.
Later in the day, Jean Pierre Sallat also joined him on the top, after signing his scorecard with six birdies against two bogeys on it.
