Chris Woakes hoping to make England Test team – Cricket News Update
English all-rounder Chris Woakes has expressed the hope that his recent performances in an unofficial Test match for the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746 A team will earn him his first Test cap.
Currently on a tour of England, the Australia A team, led by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Andrew-Graham-Downton-c44379 Cowan, are playing an unofficial Test series against the England Lions, with the series widely considered a recruiting ground for the Ashes 2013.
Batting at number 7, Woakes made a strong impression on the second day of the 1st unofficial Test, currently being played at Old Trafford in Manchester, when he contributed a solid 92 to the England http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Lions-c808’ first innings total of 315 before tea – the highest individual score registered throughout the innings.
“Hopefully next time it's in a Test match,” said Woakes. “When I first went in, it was quite tricky and offering a bit for everyone. There was turn and bounce for the spinners, but it seems to have died a bit as the day's gone on.”
The 23-year-old’s emphatic outing, accomplished against international-level bowlers such as left-arm pacer http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Nathan-Michael-Lyon-c78822, is sure to catch the selectors eyes, with Woakes’ innings having been played out at the venue which will host the third Ashes Test next year.
“My batting's something that I work hard on. It's got better the more I've played, the more I've matured as a cricketer ... the more I've worked at my batting over the last few years I feel like I've improved,” Woakes insisted, going on to add that his bowling came more naturally to him (he claimed 6 for 45 during a one-day against Australia in Brisbane last year).
Affiliated with County club http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Warwickshire-c862, the all-rounder has only featured in the national line-up 7 times. Having made his international debut last year in January, during a T20I against Australia in Adelaide, the right-hander has played 4 ODIs and 3 T20Is for England - numbers which he hopes will increase.
“I'm obviously aspiring to play Test cricket for England, so fingers crossed it's not the last time I play at Old Trafford,” he said.
