Chris Wood sets the pace at BMW Italian Open alongside Robert Rock
Chris Wood and Robert Rock smashed a score of 8-under par 64 in the opening round of the €1,500,000 BMW Italian Open. The European Tour event is taking place at the par-72 Royal Park Golf Club in Turin, Italy.
Wood, who hails from England, teed-off from the back and reeled a single birdie towards the end. His start was slow, but laid the foundation for the rest of his round. He did not rush into making errant shots, but instead remained
calm and gave the crowd some of the best moments of the day.
He marched towards the front and bombarded the opening holes with three back-to-back birdies. The crowd marveled at the player's prolificacy and filled the course with the sound of applause. Motivated by the appreciation from the
crowd, the Englishman walked towards par-5 fifth, which is the longest hole on the course. Despite facing threat from the treacherous length, the player stuck a fine approach towards the centre of the green and managed to roll the fifth birdie of the day.
The accomplishment was big, but not the last one. Wood clutched a driver in his hand and smashed a tee shot that left him standing at a distance of 200 yards away from the green. The veteran stood on the left side of the fairway
and drew a shot onto the right side of the green to roll a 12-feet-long eagle inside the cup.
Matching his previous powerful strokes, Wood rolled another birdie by the end of the front nine and sealed it with a score of 64, which was the lowest score of the day.
World number 111, who secured third position at the same course last year, said, “It was good playing with Rocky and we seemed to fire off each other. It was a good round without a bogey - always nice to play that way. I have always
liked this course. I played here in the European Amateur Team Championships and obviously last year I had a good finish and I always enjoy coming here.”
He was joined by Robert Rock, who anchored ten birdies to compile a similar score.
