Chris Wood takes home the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters title
Chris Wood eagled the final hole of the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters to record his maiden European Tour victory in style, after he defeated a George Coetzee and Sergio Garcia with a one-stroke margin, on Sunday, January 27, 2012.
The tournament was being staged at the Doha Golf Club, featuring some of the best players from different parts of the world. The tournament offered US$ 2.5 million prize purse to be grabbed by the participants.
Entering the final round, Wood was leading Simon Khan and Alexander Noren by two strokes, with a 15-under par three-round score. However, he failed to mark a good start to his final-round campaign, and faltered for a double bogey on the third hole.
He then recorded a birdie putt on the fifth hole, prior to losing the shot on the very next hole that he played. Thereafter, he made a decent comeback and added shots to his scorecard by carding birdies on the eighth, ninth and the 14th hole.
Entering the final hole of the tournament, he was trailing Coetzee and Garcia by one stroke. Therefore, he desperately needed a birdie putt to force the game to enter into the sudden-death playoffs.
However, Wood had a different plan to follow. He played a stunning 202-yard six iron shot, which landed 10 feet away from the pin. He then turned in the ball and fist pumped, as he was the man who finished the tournament on top of the leaderboard.
“Nice way to finish!" said Wood, after finishing the tournament in style.
Talking to the European Tour’s official website, Wood expressed his excitement in recording the first European Tour victory of his career.
“There’s an enormous weight lifted off my shoulders today,” he said. “I feel like I can go on and win more.  I knew it was going to be hard no matter how I played - winning on The European Tour is not easy”.
He added, “I've been knocking on the door in previous times and it's not happened. To get it today, to get my first win, it's such an honour. I'm so pleased”.
