Chris Young, Lyle Overbay guide Arizona Diamondbacks to 6-5 win over San Diego Padres – MLB Update
Chris Young shortened, Lyle Overbay tied in the ninth and Justin Upton scored in the tenth to take the Arizona Diamondbacks to a 6-5 comeback triumph over the San Diego Padres in the third outing at Chase Field in Phoenix on Saturday, September 10 to take
the third-consecutive win in the four game outing.
With a 5-3 trail before the start of the bottom of the ninth, the D-backs were under little pressure but Chris Young launched a 387-feet long one-run home-run off the Padres’ closer Heath Bell to shorten it to 5-4. Overbay swung his bat hard for a 372-feet
long one-run consecutive homer to tie it at 5-all and forced the game into a tenth inning.
In the top of the tenth, D-backs closer David Hernandez tossed a one-hitter with two-strikeouts to get his fourth win of the season. In the bottom of the tenth, Padres’ pitcher Brad Brach donated a walk to Justin Upton and then a single to Miguel Montero.
Upton was on third when Brach allowed an intentional walk to Geoff Blum and struck-out Chris Young before Joe Thatcher relieved him.
With the bases loaded, the 29-year-old with four-years experience could not comply with the pressure and tossed four straight balls to Overbay, permitting Upton to score for the D-backs 85th win of the season.
D-backs’ manager Kirk Gibson was impressed with the performance showed in the ninth inning. He was amazed by the way Heath was destroyed by his players.
"To be able to hit two home runs of Heath Bell, has that ever happened in the ninth inning?" Gibson asked. "We were very fortunate to come back on a guy that's so good, who has had so much success, yet we did it."
Young touched a 1-1 pitch and Overbay connected a 0-2 pitch for the tier hit.
He explained the pleasure he gained after a calculated hit. "It's one of those things where I knew he was going to try to throw the fastball. He just got beat by CY with the slider," Overbay said. "He elevated the pitch before, so I thought he might do that
again."
D-backs’ starter Wade Miley was under great pressure as he gave away eight hits and five runs along with four walks over just five innings. It was his first game without any decision in this season.
Micah Owings, Bryan Shaw and Ryan Cook each remained scoreless over their short innings. Owings and Cook each struck-out two batters while Shaw allowed single hit over one inning.
Padres’ starter Tim Stauffer gave away three runs on six hits and walked two batters in just over five innings.
D-backs are now at second place in the American League with 85 wins and are moving positively forward to be a part of the postseason.
