Christian Danner says Michael Schumacher wants to continue beyond 2012 F1 season – Formula 1 news
Former F1 driver Christian Danner has said that Michael Schumacher wants to continue racing with Mercedes AMG beyond 2012 Formula 1 season.
Even though, it has been reported that the seven-time world champion may say good bye to the sport as his contract with the Brackley based team will expire at the end of this season. Nonetheless, Danner expressed that the record championship holder is willing
to carry on even after this season.
“He also has to have the team want[ing] him,” he said.
In addition, he said that he will be very much pleased if Schumacher will remain in F1. Besides, he said that although the veteran German driver has grown a bit older but he is still capable enough to deliver some convincing performances in future.
“Personally I would be very happy if he goes on and he is able to go on at a good level, because at the moment he is starting to look a bit old,” Danner said on German television RTL.
Schumacher is statistically the most successful driver in the history of F1. However, he has been struggling with his performance since his comeback couple of years ago.
At present, he is standing at 18th position in drivers’ championship with only 2 points which he managed to score after securing 10th place finish in the second and fourth race. Conversely, he has not been able to pocket even a single point in the other
three races as he was retired in all of them.
On the other hand, his teammate and compatriot, Nico Rosberg who is currently at 7th place in the drivers’ rankings has shown quite impressive performances in the season so far. Furthermore, Rosberg also took his maiden victory in Chinese GP after claiming
his first ever pole position.
Above and beyond, the team principal of Mercedes, Ross Brawn believes that they need to work together in order to improve the performance of their driver Schumacher as they have not been able to deliver their best in the season until now.
“When I talk about the team, I talk about the drivers as well, the drivers aren’t outside the team, I mean collectively we – and that includes Michael – have not done a good enough job collectively in the first five races,” said Brawn.
