The Schalke defender has insisted that his side can still finish in third place at the end of the season if they continue their impressive run.
Die Knappen have been in great form of late and have won back-to back fixtures against http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/FC-Twente-c39233 and FC Kaiserslautern, both with a 4-1 scoreline. The team downed Twente in the second-leg of the UEFA Europa League round of 16 fixture
whereas the win against Kaiserslautern came in the Bundesliga.
Fuchs claimed that his side has been in sensational form in the last two weeks and is confident that the phase will continue until the season ends. He insisted that Schalke still have some difficult fixtures in the league and they
have to win them in order to qualify for the UEFA Champions League next season.
The defender is aiming to get the better of Bayer Leverkusen in this weekend’s fixture to extend the lead in fourth place. He admitted that the side will not take any chances and will go for all three points.
“Of course, it would be great if it carries on. But we’ve still got to face some tough opponents over the coming weeks. It’s important for us to extend the gap to fifth place to ten points. We’ll be looking to build that cushion
in the game against Leverkusen at the weekend,” he was quoted as saying in an interview.
On the other hand, the Austrian international stated that a third place finish at the end of the season is also within reach. He stressed that Borussia Monchengladbach are one-point ahead of Die Knappen at the moment and a finish
in the top three is certainly possible.
“Our target has got to be to qualify for the group stage of the Champions League. We’re just one point behind Borussia Monchengladbach at the moment, we’re in good shape, playing well and scoring lots of goals. I think we’re still
in with a shout for third spot,” he concluded.
Schalke will next take on Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday at the Veltins-Arena and will be looking to strengthen their claim for a place in next year’s Champions League.
