Christian Horner, Stefano Domenicali believe FIA should be trusted over Bahrain issue – Formula 1
Christian Horner and Stefano Domenicali have said that the Bahrain situation is better left to FIA and the teams should respect FIA’s decision.
The Bahrain Grand Prix has been under some cloud since the protests began in the country against the ruling government in 2011. Last year Bahrain was supposed to be the opening Grand Prix of the season but it had to be postponed due to the civil unrest.
Formula 1 Boss Bernie Ecclestone analysed the situation and sent an independent commission team to evaluate and assess the situation in the country. The commission deemed it safe for the event to be held but it was only after media pressure and local government’s
warning that it was decided to cancel the Bahrain GP.
For the 2012 season, Bahrain International Circuit (BIC) and the organisers have been very keen to hold the Grand Prix. Recently, BIC offered to rehire all the employees suspended due their role in the protests. Bahrain organisers have also said that the
government has taken all the necessary steps to smooth things in the country and it is no longer in a state of danger to the sport and the event.
Although a human rights group in Bahrain has called for the boycott of the event and asked all the teams and drivers to support the boycott.
Domenicali and Horner believe that the teams should trust FIA over the decision and whatever the decision is all the teams should respect it.
“We enter a championship run by the FIA,” Horner told the BBC. “And we need to trust in their decision.”
“I have heard lots of rumours about the situation,” Domenicali said. “We need to rely on the competent authorities: the federation, the commercial rights holder and the government of the country. We need to be cool and realistic and wait and see what happens.
We will monitor it, but we need to rely on them. We need to trust them.”
It would be unfortunate if the Bahrain GP is cancelled again, as it is the heart of Formula 1 in the Middle East and is an exciting track to race on.
